Working with Toft

Fourteen short answers. Fuller detail lives on the Services and Process pages.

Who does Toft work with?

Toft works with individuals and families who want thoughtful, ongoing help bringing their financial lives into order. The firm may be especially useful for people approaching or living in retirement, for those who have lost a spouse or received an inheritance, and for households navigating meaningful responsibility, change, or decision-making.

How do I know whether I need an advisor?

A few signs: decisions are arriving faster than you can think them through; the accounts, taxes, insurance, and estate documents live in different places; or a transition has made the picture unfamiliar. If the situation is simple and stable, a single Project Planning engagement may be all that is needed, and the first conversation will say so.

Is there an account minimum?

No. Toft does not require a minimum account size. Wealth Management has a $3,000 minimum annual advisory fee, which may make the service more or less economical depending on the household’s needs and assets.

How is Toft compensated?

Toft is fee-only: paid by clients, and only by clients. Wealth Management uses a marginal asset-based fee schedule: 1.00% on the first $1 million, 0.75% from $1 million to $5 million, 0.55% from $5 million to $10 million, 0.40% from $10 million to $25 million, and 0.30% above $25 million. Each rate applies only to assets within that tier. Ongoing Financial Planning is a monthly subscription based on scope; Project Planning is a fixed fee agreed in advance.

What is included in Wealth Management?

Ongoing financial planning and investment management, handled together. Planning moves through vision, income, investments, tax, insurance, legacy, and organization, with the emphasis changing as the household’s needs change. Investment management covers portfolio design, implementation, rebalancing, and ongoing monitoring of the accounts Toft manages.

Can I work with Toft on planning only?

Yes. Ongoing Financial Planning continues year to year for households whose investments are managed elsewhere; Project Planning addresses one defined question. Wealth Management remains the primary service.

Do I have to move my accounts?

For Wealth Management, managed accounts are held at Charles Schwab, so accounts elsewhere would be transferred. For planning-only engagements, accounts stay where they are.

Where are client assets held?

Client assets are held with Charles Schwab & Co., Inc., an independent qualified custodian. Toft provides advice and manages the portfolio under the client’s authorization but does not take custody of client funds.

How does Toft approach investing?

The approach emphasizes broad diversification, disciplined implementation, reasonable costs, and a portfolio aligned with the household’s need and ability to take risk. Tax considerations, cash needs, existing holdings, and transition costs are evaluated case by case.

How often do clients meet with Toft?

After onboarding, clients generally have two scheduled planning meetings each year, typically 1 hour, with additional conversations when decisions or life events call for them. Between meetings, questions are welcome by email or a call.

Can Toft work with my attorney or tax professional?

Yes. With the client’s permission, Toft can help organize questions and communicate with attorneys, accountants, insurance professionals, and other specialists.

Does Toft work virtually?

Yes. Toft is based in Bloomington–Normal, Illinois and is designed to serve clients virtually as well as locally, subject to applicable registration requirements.

What happens when I reach out?

The first conversation is a chance to understand what is on your mind, what kind of help you are seeking, and whether Toft is likely to be a useful fit. You do not need to prepare a complete financial file. If the fit is unclear, you are free to stop there.

Can I end the relationship?

Yes. Either party can end the agreement with written notice, and fees are prorated for the period. Your accounts remain yours at the custodian throughout.

Have a question that is not here?

Reach out with a little context, and the first conversation can begin there.
